We recently embarked on a summer finale road trip from Oklahoma to the California coast to see family, stopping at tourist spots along the way.
One such stop was Los Angeles where we stayed at the adorable El Royale Hotel just a mile from Universal Studios Hollywood.
This was a last-minute booking for an impromptu overnight stay in LA and we lucked out! The cottages were adorable and my children adored staying here! The property, less than a mile away from Universal, seemed tucked away from the bustling street and the entrance was trimmed with ivy which made it both inviting and also like a buffer from the outside street. We actually passed it once before realizing that was our entrance and had to turn around. I wasn’t upset by that. On the contrary, it was somewhat comforting.
The room was spacious and clean, beds were comfortable, water pressure was great, climate control was accurate, and the staff were fun, welcoming, and accommodating.
Xavier, the concierge, was a delight. He joked with us about dinosaurs plucking people off the Jurassic Park ride at Universal, gave us directions to Hollywood blvd, and tips about the best places to park and where to avoid. Upon checkout he genuinely wanted feedback about our experience, and when I told him I planned on writing a positive review he joked that I should mention him as being “charming, and very, very humble.” We had a wonderful experience.
There wasn’t a coffee pot in the room, but that’s such a minor inconvenience.
The shower leaked terribly from under the glass door when in use and water soaked the bathroom floor and seeped into the main room area a little, however, we just sopped it up with a towel and when I reported it the next morning they made a note to have maintenance fix it and I fully trust they handled it. Again, a very minor inconvenience that didn’t detract from our stay. Maintenance issues pop up occasionally in every hotel from time to time, it’s how the issue is resolved that’s important and they handled it well.
Of course, one always hopes for the room price to be slightly less expensive, but it was on par with other hotel rooms in the area so it wasn’t unfair.
I felt a little uneasy in general just being in an unfamiliar area of the city with young kids where there were unfortunate, underprivileged people roaming the street outside of the property, and there was a frosted window in the bathroom of a ground level room that I feared had the potential to be breached in the middle of the night even though it faced the back of the property and was locked. However, I later learned that they close the gate to the entrance of the cottages at midnight which eased my fears. I give it a 4 out of 5 and would absolutely stay here again!
